Weekend blue micromoon: a distant, dimmer full moon won't return until 2028

A rare blue micromoon will appear this weekend as the second full moon of May (a blue moon) and the most distant, smallest-looking full moon of the year. It will be about 6% smaller and 10% dimmer than a typical full moon due to its distance of roughly 252,360 miles, so the effect may be subtle. The next blue moon won’t occur until December 31, 2028. In the Northern Hemisphere it will appear near Antares in the Scorpius constellation, with the Southern Hemisphere potentially seeing Antares briefly disappear behind the Moon. The Virtual Telescope Project will stream live images of the event.

September's Full Corn Moon and Total Lunar Eclipse: What You Need to Know

This weekend, sky-gazers in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia can witness a total lunar eclipse, turning the moon a deep red, alongside the full corn moon. The eclipse, visible from specific regions and lasting over an hour, offers a spectacular view of the moon's changing phases, with best viewing away from bright lights. The event coincides with the peak of the corn moon, and additional celestial events like meteor showers and upcoming solar eclipses are also on the horizon.

Upcoming Blood Moon and Total Lunar Eclipse: Viewing Guide and Timing

A total lunar eclipse and blood moon will occur on September 7, lasting over 5 hours with the blood moon visible for 82 minutes, primarily observable from Australia, Asia, Africa, and Eastern Europe, while viewers in the Americas will not see it. The event is caused by Earth's shadow on the moon, giving it a red hue, and can be safely watched without special eye protection.

UK Guide to Viewing the Blood Moon Total Lunar Eclipse

A total lunar eclipse, known as a Blood Moon, will be visible in the UK on Sunday evening, with the Moon turning red as it passes through Earth's shadow. The eclipse begins with the penumbral phase at 16:28 BST and reaches maximum at 19:11 BST, just before moonrise, offering a chance to witness the red hue caused by Earth's atmosphere. Viewers should find a clear horizon and use binoculars or a telescope for the best experience, with the next opportunity in the UK occurring on 28 August 2026.

Upcoming 2025 Planet Parade and Astronomical Events to Watch For

A rare 'planet parade' featuring six planets (Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune) will be visible in the eastern sky from August 17 to 20, with most visible to the naked eye except Uranus and Neptune, which require a telescope. The event coincides with a waning crescent moon, enhancing the viewing experience, especially on August 19 and 20.
