50 Years Ago: Star Trek Cast and NASA Celebrate the Rollout of Space Shuttle Enterprise
On September 17, 1976, NASA unveiled the first space shuttle, OV-101, at a Rockwell facility in Palmdale, California. The event featured a surprise appearance by the cast of Star Trek, including Leonard Nimoy and Gene Roddenberry, after fans successfully lobbied President Gerald Ford to name the orbiter 'Enterprise' instead of 'Constitution'. Fifty years later, the Intrepid Museum in New York is hosting a panel discussion to mark the anniversary, featuring NASA leaders and astronauts to discuss the orbiter's legacy in shaping modern spaceflight.
