While microgravity poses severe health risks for astronauts, creating artificial gravity on spacecraft remains technically feasible but historically hindered by budget cuts. Experts note that while the engineering is possible, sustained funding is the primary barrier to implementation.
On September 27, 1997, NASA’s Mars Pathfinder lander transmitted its final data to Earth after its battery failed. The mission, which included the first Mars rover, Sojourner, lasted three months, exceeding its one-month goal. NASA attempted to reestablish contact for five months before officially ending the mission. Pathfinder served as a low-cost technology testbed, validating airbag landing systems and rocker-bogie suspension used in later missions like Spirit and Opportunity.
The California Science Center has erected two solid rocket motors from the Space Shuttle Endeavour, which are now on display in the new exhibit at the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center. The $400 million project will double the science center's educational exhibit space and includes 100 authentic artifacts, such as the Space Hab and the Endeavour itself. The motors, which provide 80% of the power to launch the shuttle into orbit, are 116 feet tall and weigh over 100,000 pounds each. The tank and orbiter will be added in January.
