Houthi forces released imagery claiming they shot down a Royal Saudi Air Force F-15 over Marib; Reuters says the claim is unverified and Saudi confirmation is lacking. The flare-up comes as Yemen’s conflict intensifies, with Houthis expanding missiles and drones attacks on Saudi targets and threatening Red Sea shipping, highlighting the ongoing resilience of their mobile, infrared-based air defenses.
The Yemen-based Houthi movement says it shot down a Royal Saudi Air Force F-15 over Marib with a locally produced surface-to-air missile and that air defenses then targeted additional Saudi and allied jets; Saudi authorities have not commented on the claim, which remains unverified by independent sources. The report appears in a broader context of heightened tensions after a Mecca drone incident, which the Houthis deny targeting at holy sites; past Houthi shootdown claims have sometimes matched real losses, but confirmation is lacking.
Russia is pounding Ukraine with jet-propelled drones that fly faster than older models and are being launched in numbers meant to overwhelm Kyiv’s air defenses, forcing Ukraine to adapt in a high-tech arms race.
According to The Atlantic, Ukraine allegedly drafted a plan codenamed 'M&Ms' to deploy up to 1,000 autonomous drones in a single night to overwhelm Moscow’s four major airports, disrupt air travel and pressure Russia toward negotiations; the drones would autonomously identify targets, and the operation was reportedly halted after Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov resigned, though Kyiv denies the operation’s existence and says Ukraine’s goal is to trigger temporary emergency air-traffic restrictions rather than shut airports; the plan’s viability remains unclear.
Ukraine's long-range drones, including FP-1 and Lyutyi, have intensified deep strikes against Russia since 2024, repeatedly hitting distant oil facilities and widening the operational map despite high air-defense interception figures; notable strikes have targeted refineries such as Tobolsk-Neftekhim and Taneko, in a campaign meant to curb Russia's oil revenue used to fund the war.
A Russian ballistic missile strike hit Kyiv, killing one person and drawing attention to gaps in the city’s air defenses, in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
Kyiv and Ukrainian officials say Russia unleashed one of the war’s largest ballistic-missile attacks, firing more than 40 missiles and 120 attack drones with Kyiv as the main target; Ukraine’s air force said defenders shot down 126 targets (18 missiles and 108 drones). Debris and crater damage were reported in five Kyiv districts, with one person killed and 16 wounded. President Zelensky urged continued anti-ballistic defenses as the situation develops.
Live updates show Kuwait’s forces intercepting missiles and drones after Iran threatened retaliation for fresh US strikes on Iran, with Iran’s IRGC claiming to hit US facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait and to have downed a drone. Bahrain reports sirens and air-defense activity as the US confirms strikes on Iran targeting air defenses, coastal surveillance, and anti-ship capabilities in response to attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, fueling a spike in oil prices as tensions escalate.
Ukraine says it struck a satellite communications center near Dubna, used for reconnaissance and coordinating Russia’s forces, in what Zelenskyy called a large-scale attack as more than 60 drones hit Moscow; city officials said air defenses destroyed 61 drones, while a 6-month-old died in Yegoryevsk and an admin building was damaged in Dubna, with brief airport disruptions at Domodedovo and Zhukovsky; Russia reported downing hundreds of Ukrainian drones across 18 regions, and Kyiv signaled further strikes on similar facilities as part of a wider campaign targeting energy infrastructure and deep strikes into Russia.
At the G7 summit in Evian, leaders voiced cautious optimism after a “very good” meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy, with Trump urging Russia to make peace while Zelenskyy pressed for tougher sanctions and stronger Ukrainian air defenses; European officials described a constructive mood, but Trump offered few concrete pledges and the talks also touched on Iran and Hormuz shipping as part of a broader effort to sustain pressure on Moscow while pursuing diplomatic openings.
Ukraine said its forces overnight May 21-22 struck multiple Russian targets across occupied Ukraine and inside Russia, including air-defense systems, command posts, drone-control centers and ammunition depots, along with troop concentrations and river crossings in Bryansk and Kursk regions. Notable hits included an Osa air-defense system in occupied Donetsk, drone-control points in Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions, depots in Velyka Novosilka and Rovenky, a command center near Voskresenka, and a refinery attack in Russia’s Yaroslavl region.
ISW-CTP’s latest update chronicles a fast-escalating conflict: the US-Israel campaign claims thousands of targets hit since Feb. 28, with the IDF reporting 170 targets struck in the last 24 hours and claims of destroying over 80% of Iran’s air defenses, including strikes on defense-industrial sites that likely degrade missiles and drones. The United States says about 150 Iranian vessels have been destroyed; NATO air defenses intercepted an Iranian missile over Turkey. Iran and its proxies conducted counterstrikes across the Gulf region and into Iraq and Lebanon, including drone and missile attacks linked to the Houthis, Iraqi militias, and Hezbollah, alongside cross-border incidents near Kuwait and Haifa. The IAEA confirmed on March 29 that strikes on the Arak heavy-water reactor rendered the facility inoperable. Reports also note the deployment of PMF fighters to western Iran and continued strikes on key Iranian bases and industrial sites, signaling a multi-domain escalation and widespread regional disruption.
Explosions were heard in the southern Russian city of Taganrog late March 29 amid a drone attack; one person was killed and another injured, with a drone reported to have struck a school as air defenses were engaged and fires spread on the ground. Rostov Oblast officials said emergency services were at the scene, while Telegram channels circulated reports of Shahed-type drones over Taganrog and a residential building being hit. Kyiv Independent noted that details could not be independently verified as the war continues and Ukraine has been striking within Russia.
Ukrainian advisers in the Gulf reportedly observed the U.S. relying on multi‑million‑dollar missiles to shoot down cheap drones, contrasting with Ukraine’s cheaper, mobile, manually controlled air-defense tactics. Zelensky has highlighted that Ukraine intercepts drones with systems costing as little as $10,000, while U.S. missiles can cost millions per shot, fueling debate over whether expensive defenses are the best response to low-cost drone threats as warfare evolves.
NBC News analyzed more than 30 open‑source videos and satellite images showing Iran using Shahed‑type drones to hit bases, energy infrastructure, and diplomatic sites across seven countries. The drones can reach targets despite defenses, and interceptions are costly, signaling a new asymmetrical warfare approach that could prolong the conflict and impact Gulf air traffic and the Hormuz Strait, with Iran’s drone program also tied to broader regional and global arms dynamics.
