Ancient Andes Landscape Survived Giant Eruption, Revealing Slow Mountain Growth
A 21.9-million-year-old Cardones ignimbrite eruption buried an ancient Andean landscape in northern Chile, enabling researchers to reconstruct pre-eruption topography and place an upper bound on uplift of about 0.26 km per million years (roughly 2.6 cm per century), supporting a slow, steady rise of the Andes and illustrating a new method for reading vanished landscapes from volcanic deposits.
