A Chicago-area dog named Flor, missing for 12 years, is reunited with Vanessa Antonino after being found in Gary, Indiana following severe weather. A volunteer and Microchip Hunters traced Flor’s microchip (which had outdated contact info) and an Evanston Animal Shelter volunteer transported her home, highlighting the importance of keeping microchip data current for future reunions.
Ukraine said its missile barrage hit Bryansk, Russia, killing at least six and wounding dozens, with the Kremniy El microchip plant cited as a target. Ukraine claimed responsibility, using British-supplied Storm Shadow missiles, and released drone footage of the attack; the plant is a major supplier to Russia’s defense sector. The governor reported 37 wounded hospitalized as details about specific targets were not disclosed.
Researchers demonstrated an electrically driven surface acoustic wave phonon laser on a chip, generating gigahertz SAWs that could enable all radio processing on a single, smaller, more power-efficient smartphone chip.
Researchers at the University of Queensland have developed the world's smallest wave tank on a chip, using superfluid helium to observe unique nonlinear wave behaviors, including solitons and shock fronts, with potential applications in understanding complex fluid phenomena and advancing fluid dynamics research.
After being lost for two years and surviving outdoors through harsh weather, Lilly the cat was finally found and reunited with her owner, Alexis Keith, thanks to a microchip, highlighting the importance of microchipping pets for their safe return.
Microchip Technology Inc. is implementing pay cuts for its workers and a two-week shutdown at its three largest semiconductor factories in the U.S. in March and June to better manage inventory amid a 'weak macro environment.' The company is planning a 10% pay cut for employees not associated with factory shutdowns and a 20% pay cut for its executive team, while also reducing activity at many of its other global factories. CEO Ganesh Moorthy stated that these measures are consistent with the company's culture of shared sacrifices and rewards, aiming to avoid layoffs and protect manufacturing capability for long-term success.
The U.S. Department of Commerce has awarded Microchip, a Colorado Springs business, $162 million to expand its operations, creating at least 400 new jobs in the semiconductor industry. This expansion is seen as a significant step towards enhancing America's economic and national security by reducing dependency on foreign semiconductor suppliers. The investment will enable Microchip to triple its production nationwide, offering jobs with an average salary significantly higher than the county's average wage.
NASA's Europa Clipper spacecraft is offering the public the opportunity to have their names stenciled onto a microchip that will ride aboard the spacecraft as it explores Jupiter's moon Europa. The "Message in a Bottle" campaign will close on December 31, 2023, and so far, about 700,000 names have been submitted. The microchip, along with a metal plate engraved with a poem by U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón, will be attached to the spacecraft's exterior, serving as a message in a bottle during its close flybys of Europa. The mission aims to gather data on Europa's subsurface ocean, icy crust, and atmosphere to determine its potential for supporting life.
NASA is offering the public a chance to add their names to a microchip that will be placed aboard the Europa Clipper spacecraft as it explores Jupiter's moon, Europa. The deadline to join the "Message in a Bottle" campaign is December 31, 2023. So far, about 700,000 names have been submitted, and they will be stenciled onto a dime-size silicon microchip. The chip, along with an engraved metal plate featuring a poem by U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón, will be attached to the spacecraft. The mission aims to gather data on Europa's subsurface ocean, icy crust, and atmosphere to determine its potential for supporting life. The spacecraft is scheduled to launch in October 2024.
Scientists have successfully fired up the world's smallest particle accelerator, known as a nanophotonic electron accelerator (NEA), which is the size of a small coin. The NEA consists of a microchip with a vacuum tube made up of thousands of pillars, where electrons are accelerated by mini laser beams. In a recent study, researchers from the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) in Germany increased the energy of electrons by 43%. This achievement, along with a similar one by colleagues at Stanford University, paves the way for the development of particle accelerators on microchips, opening up a range of potential applications.
A family in Kansas has been reunited with their missing cat, Sarin, after three years. The cat was found in Colorado and was identified through its microchip. The shelter workers arranged for Sarin to be transported back to Kansas, where she was tearfully reunited with her family. It is still unclear how Sarin ended up so far away from home, but the incident highlights the importance of microchipping and keeping contact information up to date.
Three dividend stocks with strong growth prospects in the technology sector are highlighted. Broadcom, despite recent declines in its shares, is expected to benefit from AI and an upcoming acquisition, with a current dividend yield of 2.3%. Microchip, with exposure to industrial computing and IoT, has a history of revenue growth and is increasing its dividend on a quarterly basis. Ubiquiti, known for its switches and WiFi equipment, has experienced a pullback but is expected to normalize and has a dividend yield of 1.6%.
A Texas family has been reunited with their dog, Jill, after she went missing for over three years. Thanks to her microchip, Jill was found just a few blocks away from their old house in Little Rock, Arkansas. The family had relocated to Texas but never gave up hope of finding their beloved pet. Jill's return brought indescribable joy to the family, especially their daughter who had a special bond with the dogs. The family is still hopeful that their other dog, Jack, will be found in the same neighborhood.
