Bank of England to Hold Rates at 3.75% Amid Rising UK Inflation
The Bank of England is expected to maintain its benchmark interest rate at 3.75% on Thursday, diverging from recent hikes by the Federal Reserve and European Central Bank. This decision comes despite UK inflation rising to 3.1% in August, driven largely by a 23% year-on-year surge in motor fuel costs. While markets price an 80% chance of a hold, analysts anticipate a potential 25-basis-point increase at the next meeting in November. The central bank has not adjusted rates since a 25-basis-point cut in December, as policymakers weigh the impact of energy shocks and fiscal concerns on borrowing costs.
