Royal Oak's Sign of the Beefcarver to Close Oct. 25 After 70 Years
Sign of the Beefcarver, a historic family-owned restaurant in Royal Oak, Michigan, will permanently close its final location on October 25. The closure ends a 70-year run for the Woodward Avenue establishment, which opened in 1957. The owners cited extreme financial pressure from rising food costs, specifically the high price of roast beef, as the primary reason for the shutdown. The restaurant also noted that it never fully recovered from the economic devastation caused by the pandemic and subsequent government policies. The closure marks the end of the last remaining location in a chain that once operated up to 12 sites across metro Detroit. Customers have responded with an outpouring of nostalgia, with many sharing memories of family traditions and Sunday dinners. The restaurant will close for the day once it runs out of food, and fixtures may be available for sale.
