Genetic bottlenecks and hunting drove aurochs extinction in Scandinavia

A new study reveals that aurochs vanished from Scandinavia thousands of years earlier than elsewhere in Europe due to a combination of genetic bottlenecks, intense hunting, and habitat loss. Researchers analyzed ancient DNA from bones found in bogs and settlement sites in southern Sweden and Denmark to reconstruct the population history of these wild cattle ancestors. The findings indicate that while the species survived globally until the 17th century, the Scandinavian population collapsed around 6,500 years ago. This early extinction was driven by a sharp drop in genetic diversity during their initial migration north, followed by isolation when rising seas flooded land bridges to mainland Europe. Concurrently, increased human settlement and hunting pressure, combined with the expansion of dense forests that reduced grazing land, led to the final disappearance of the species in the region.

"Tattoos Linked to Higher Lymphoma Risk, Study Finds"

A new study from Lund University in Sweden reveals that individuals with tattoos may have a 21% higher risk of developing lymphoma, regardless of the tattoo's size. The study, which involved nearly 12,000 participants, found that the risk is highest among those who got their first tattoo less than two years prior. Researchers call for more studies to understand the long-term health implications of tattoos as their popularity continues to rise.

Rare Terbium Found in Atmosphere of Hottest Exoplanet in Galaxy

Lund University researchers have discovered the rare metal terbium in the atmosphere of KELT-9 b, the galaxy’s hottest exoplanet, using a new analysis method. The discovery of terbium in an exoplanet’s atmosphere is surprising as it is a rare earth metal that belongs to the lanthanoids. The researchers' advanced measurement method has opened up the possibility of finding out more about the atmospheres of other exoplanets, potentially leading to insights on exoplanets’ ages, formation, and the possibility of Earth-like planets.

Rare element found in exoplanet's atmosphere by scientists.

Scientists at Lund University have discovered the rare metal terbium in the atmosphere of exoplanet KELT-9 b, using a new method for analyzing exoplanets. Terbium is a rare earth metal that belongs to the lanthanoids and has never been found in any exoplanet's atmosphere before. The discovery of terbium in KELT-9 b's atmosphere is surprising and opens up the possibility of finding out more about the atmospheres of other exoplanets.
