
Inflation still outpaces wages, squeezing paychecks as energy costs bite
Inflation rose 3.4% in August while wage growth was 3.1%, eroding real earnings and leaving Americans with less purchasing power. Energy costs—especially gasoline—drive much of the price gain, prompting households to cut back and shift to discount retailers. With wage growth cooling and inflation persisting, economists warn it could be a long road to relief, potentially until 2027 before inflation and wages converge.
