A Stanford-led study shows that during the Permian–Triassic extinction about 252 million years ago, rapid warming and falling oxygen favored more metabolically active animals with efficient oxygen uptake (like mollusks) over slow, low-energy groups (such as brachiopods), helping explain why clams and snails survived while many ancient rivals vanished and highlighting how current ocean warming could drive similar patterns.
