When the Power Goes Out: Time- and Temperature-based Rules to Save Your Groceries
During a power outage, keep fridge and freezer doors shut: a full freezer stays cold for about 48 hours (24 hours if half-full) and an unopened fridge for roughly four hours. You cannot rely on sight, smell, or taste to judge safety; perishable foods should be discarded if they've been at room temperature for more than two hours. After power returns, check temperatures: if the freezer is at 40°F or below (and items show ice crystals), the food may be refrozen or cooked; if above 40°F with no ice crystals, discard. Use appliance thermometers to monitor temps, and consider cold storage tools like coolers and ice packs to extend safety during outages. Plan ahead with frozen containers of water or dry ice for longer outages, and when in doubt, throw it out.
