One Sauna Session Briefly Boosts Immune Cells in Blood

A 30-minute sauna session with a mid-way cold shower temporarily increases all circulating white blood cell types, including neutrophils and lymphocytes, peaking during heat exposure and returning to baseline about 30 minutes after the session ends. The rise likely reflects mobilization of immune cells from tissues—a mechanism similar to exercise that could enhance immune surveillance—though cytokine changes were small and long-term effects remain unknown. The study involved 51 adults and was published in Temperature, focusing on immediate, not lasting, immune responses.

Depression Shows Brain-Linked Gene Signals in White Blood Cells

A study of 1,864 people with major depressive disorder and 1,208 controls found 1,383 genes with altered activity in white blood cells, including 18 synapse-related genes that reliably separated depressed individuals from healthy ones. Seven of these genes were also altered in mood-related brain regions, suggesting a systemic, body-wide link between depression and immune biology. The work is exploratory and does not establish causation, but points to potential blood-based biomarkers and new avenues for research and treatment targeting inflammation.

Promising Breakthrough: UK Researchers Unveil Exciting Prospects for Prostate Cancer Treatment

UK researchers have discovered a new treatment for some patients with treatment-resistant prostate cancer that can block the messages cancer uses to hijack white blood cells. In early clinical trials, this process made advanced prostate cancers more treatable, shrinking tumors or halting their growth. The researchers targeted feeder myeloid white blood cells, which are typically pulled into cancer tumors to advance the disease. This approach slowed the growth of cancer tumors and made them more responsive to treatment. While the study had a small sample size, the results are promising and suggest an entirely new way to treat prostate cancer.

The Alarming Impact of Space Travel on Astronauts' Immune Systems.

A new study funded by the Canadian Space Agency has found that space travel can alter gene expression in white blood cells and weaken the immune system, making astronauts more susceptible to infections while in space. Astronauts on board the International Space Station commonly suffer from skin rashes and respiratory and non-respiratory diseases. The study examined 14 astronauts who resided on the International Space Station between 2015 and 2019 and found that about 15,410 genes were differentially expressed in leukocytes. The researchers said that these results suggest that when someone travels to space, these changes in gene expression cause a rapid decrease in the strength of their immune system.
