Ozempic Hair: Why rapid weight loss from GLP-1 drugs can trigger shedding
Ozempic hair describes the hair shedding seen after rapid weight loss on GLP-1 drugs such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro. Doctors say the shedding is usually not caused directly by the drug but by rapid weight loss and related nutritional gaps including protein, iron, zinc, vitamin D and B vitamins, which can disrupt the hair growth cycle known as telogen effluvium. Symptoms include more hair on pillows, in brushes, and during washing, especially with very rapid weight loss or extreme calorie restriction. The shedding is typically temporary and improves as weight stabilizes and nutrition improves. To reduce risk, aim for gradual weight loss, ensure adequate protein and micronutrients, avoid crash diets, and consult a dermatologist if shedding persists or bald patches appear.
