Study Finds Asthma May Impair Children's Memory Skills

A study from UC Davis links asthma in children to memory deficits, particularly affecting episodic memory. Children with asthma scored lower on memory tasks compared to peers without the condition, with early-onset asthma linked to slower memory development. The study suggests chronic inflammation or oxygen disruption from asthma may impact cognitive development, potentially increasing the risk of dementia later in life. This highlights the importance of monitoring cognitive development in children with asthma.

UC Academic Workers Strike Over Protest Crackdown and Free Speech Violations

Academic workers at UCLA and UC Davis have joined a strike initiated by United Auto Workers Local 4811, protesting the University of California's handling of pro-Palestinian protests and encampment crackdowns. The strike, which began at UC Santa Cruz, is disrupting classes and academic activities as workers demand protection of free speech, amnesty for participants, and divestment from companies profiting from Israel's actions in Gaza. The university's request to halt the strike was denied by the state labor board, and the strike is expected to expand to more campuses.

UC Strike Grows as Court Denies Order to Halt Protests

The University of California academic workers' strike is intensifying with walkouts at UCLA and UC Davis after a state labor board declined to halt it, despite UC officials' claims of its illegality. The strike, led by United Auto Workers Local 4811, involves 48,000 academic workers protesting alleged free speech violations and other unfair labor practices. The legality of the strike remains under review, with a ruling expected in three weeks. The strike could significantly impact the academic calendar, as it coincides with the end of classes and critical grading periods.

"Identification of Crucial Player in Pancreatic Cancer Metastasis"

Researchers at the University of California, Davis have identified a protein, Engrailed-1 (EN1), that is linked to the progression and metastasis of pancreatic cancer. The abnormal expression of EN1 promotes pancreatic cancer progression and metastasis in vitro and in mouse models, and elevated EN1 levels are associated with severe, metastatic pancreatic cancer in human patients. The findings suggest that EN1 could be a potential target for pancreatic cancer therapies, and the researchers are working on ways to translate their findings into clinical applications. This discovery sheds light on the molecular mechanisms driving metastasis in pancreatic cancer and could lead to the development of new therapeutic strategies for this challenging disease.

UC Davis Implements Contact Tracing to Contain Tuberculosis Outbreak

UC Davis is investigating a case of contagious tuberculosis on campus and is working with health officials to conduct contract tracing and prevent the disease from spreading. The exposure risk to the general community is low. Symptoms of active TB include cough, chest pain, weakness, weight loss, loss of appetite, chills, fever, and night sweats. TB is treatable and curable, and most people with an inactive TB infection are not contagious.
