Excavator operator unearths 50-ton boulder during O'Hare terminal modernization
A 50-ton dolostone boulder was discovered 30 feet underground at O'Hare International Airport during excavation work for an $8.8 billion terminal modernization project. The rock, identified by geologists as potentially 400 million years old, is now on public display at the airport's Multi-Modal Facility. The Chicago Department of Aviation has launched a public naming contest, receiving over 2,300 submissions, including humorous and political suggestions, with the final name to be decided by public vote.
