Spain’s Buñol hosts global crowd for iconic La Tomatina tomato fight
Thousands of revelers from around the world gathered in Buñol near Valencia for La Tomatina, the famed tomato-throwing festival. Participants fling squashed tomatoes for about an hour after a cannon signals the start, with the sole rule being to squash tomatoes before throwing to prevent injuries. Non‑locals reportedly attend with a ticket (around 15 euros). Similar tomato battles have occurred in Florida, London, Amsterdam, Sutamarchán (Colombia) and Hyderabad (India). After the hour, streets are washed and the citric tomato juice often cleans the town, ending another season of this quirky festival.
